Skincare can sometimes feel like a luxury reserved for people with expensive products, huge routines, or endless time. Social media can make it seem as if you need a shelf full of serums, masks, and trendy products to have “good” skin. You don’t.
Healthy skin is about taking care of yourself—not trying to achieve someone else’s idea of perfect skin.
During the teenage years, your skin can change because of hormones. You may experience oiliness, dryness, breakouts, or other changes. That doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It means your skin is growing and changing too.
Keep It Simple
A complicated routine isn’t necessarily a better routine. Dermatologists recommend focusing on a few basics: gently cleansing your skin, moisturizing, and protecting it from the sun.
And here’s something worth remembering: expensive doesn’t automatically mean better. A simple routine with products that suit your skin can be more useful than constantly buying whatever happens to be trending online.
Don’t Compare Your Skin
One of the hardest parts of being a teenager today is seeing seemingly perfect skin everywhere—from influencers to advertisements to edited photos.
But real skin has pores. Real skin gets pimples. Real skin can have scars, marks, different textures, and different tones.
Your skin doesn’t have to look filtered to be healthy.
Instead of asking, “How can I make my skin look like theirs?” try asking:
“What does my skin need?”
That’s a much healthier question.
Protect What You Have
Taking care of your skin isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about respecting your body and developing habits that can benefit you for years.
Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when you’re outdoors, and choose gentle products that work for your skin’s needs.
If a product causes significant irritation or you’re struggling with persistent skin problems, talk with a parent, guardian, healthcare professional, or dermatologist rather than simply adding more products.
Your Skin Deserves Care
You don’t need a $200 skincare routine.
You don’t need ten products.
You don’t need perfect skin.
You simply need to take care of the skin you have.
Because skincare isn’t about looking like someone else. It’s about caring for yourself.
